Step Out

The dog days of summer are drawing to a close. Cooler weather, hopefully, is on the way. If you live in the South, you know why I said “hopefully.” Fall’s gentle breezes bring a slight chill to the air. We pull out our comfy sweaters and begin decorating our home for the fall season.

As we enter into the new season, don’t get too comfortable in those comfy sweaters.

Last fall, I received some success regarding my writing. I made the decision to take a break. I’m not saying this was a bad decision. Where I erred is in the length of that break. I got comfortable not writing.

I then experienced several different challenges that forced me back into writing. One resulted in me focusing on writing nonfiction.

I worked in public relations for many years, so I was used to writing about people’s lives and telling their stories. However, writing a nonfiction picture book is different. I was hesitant, but there was a story bubbling on the inside of me that I had a strong desire to write.

So, I stepped out of my comfort zone. Writing the story was difficult at first. I didn’t know which way to go with it, then all of a sudden, it began to flow. The more research I did, the easier it became to write. Along the way, I allowed my mentor to read it. After her helpful critique, I was able to craft a story that I love dearly. Imagine if I had remained in the rut of complacency.

Don’t allow doubt, fear, or the impostor syndrome to keep you trapped in your comfort zone. Step out on faith. Do what you feel is impossible and include God in it. Matthew 19:26 says, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

I pray you move from your comfort zone into the greatness God has placed on the inside of you.
