Writing Together

Writing can sometimes be a lonely process, but it doesn’t have to be. Having a strong writing community is integral to the success of all writers.

I wanted to share two virtual writing opportunities offered to the writing community. And the best thing about these virtual sessions is they are 100% free.

The first is the monthly #PBPowerHour. Geared specifically to picture book writers, this hour long session provides writing exercises and prompts for writers at all levels.

Jamie Rodarte is the founder and creator of the virtual writing session, #PBPowerHour.  Each month, picture book creators gather for 60 minutes of short varying writing exercises.

“This idea originated from my day job where we have one-hour sessions geared towards prospecting clients. The hour consists of the same four 15-minute exercises,” says Rodarte.

Rodarte, who is consistently focused on improving her writing, wished she could do the same for picture book writing.

“I mentioned this idea to a critique partner (Christine Rivera Creque) who agreed to give it a try. With one onboard, I reached out to my other CPs (Judy Campbell-Smith and Abby Mumford) to round out the planning committee. Our first #PBPowerHour was held on June 5, 2022, and each month a different host provides fresh exercises. Happily, a community quickly formed reminding us how valuable it is as a vehicle for making a difference. We have over 170 sign-ups and an average of 30+ participants for each writing session (and counting!),” shares Rodarte.

“We’re excited to expand the planning committee as it adds new perspectives, injects energy, and furthers growth opportunities for each artist who participates. We're unified in our goals to get great stories in little hands. A pretty cool dream to share collectively! We were thrilled when Tunisia Williams agreed to join the planning committee! Thank you for being part of this initiative and for the work you're doing to make amazing books, Tunisia!” she adds.

#PBPowerHour will host its next session on Oct. 1 with new planning committee member and illustrator Amanda Dowell.

The Virtual Writing Space Together Alone is another great space for writers of all genres and levels. The sessions are held Monday - Friday. This creative space was founded by author Chris Tebbetts.

Tebbetts says, “The times and host change every week....people can check my IG @christebbetts for the schedule, which I post every week. And, anyone who would like to host a week is always welcome!”

I have participated in both of these virtual writing opportunities and have enjoyed the community these spaces offer.

Let me know if you have found any of these opportunities helpful.
