Agented, but Not Yet Published

For almost two years I hunkered down in the query trenches. Lobbing queries like grenades into the inboxes of unsuspecting agents, in hopes of exploding on the scene as the next greatest author.

I received rejection after rejection until one day, I got the email I had been anticipating. An agent was interested in my story. I had “the Call” with Hilary Harwell of KT Literary and she offered me representation! Finally, my dream of becoming a published author was going to come true.

I must say that my expectations were a bit unreal. Hilary was upfront with me about the process of being on submission; but I’m a dreamer with an overactive imagination. I would be the exception to the rule…famous last words.

I was not the exception to the rule, I was the rule. I went from the frying pan into the fire of being on sub. The feedback I received was positive, but my story still “wasn’t the right fit.” Yep, those dreaded words uttered from agents during the query process were being uttered again, but this time from editors.

The words stung, but not as much. Not sure if it was due to my being somewhat used to rejection or if it was due to the positive feedback. Either way, after being on submission for a few months, my agent and I decided it was time to pull the story and work on revisions.

During this time, I continued to write new stories to keep busy. I also attended workshops, webinars, and became part of a wonderful critique group. Shout out to the Diversity Divas!

Realizing my writing wasn’t quite there yet, I looked for mentor opportunities. This past summer, I was selected as a PB Rising Star mentee. My mentor, whom I affectionately call my frientor (friend/mentor), was Kailei Pew. She helped me grow as a writer by providing me with much needed support and encouragement.

I am now back in the submission trenches again. This time with stronger manuscripts and a little more confidence. I know one day, my books will be out in the world.

If you are agented and not yet published, don’t give up. You have what it takes. You are one “No” closer to your “Yes.”

And most importantly, never compare your journey to that of someone else. Everyone’s path to success is different. Embrace the path you are on and remain focused on God’s purpose for your life.

Writers Tip: When on submission, continue to read, write, and invest in your craft. There are several wonderful craft related webinars available. Also, tap into the writing community on the various social media platforms.
