Layers, Not Just for Cakes
When I first went on submission with my agent, I received feedback from an editor stating my story needed another layer. At first, I was confused by this statement until I began researching the term and learning how to incorporate layers into my MS.
I will now give you what I have learned. Please understand I am by no means an expert on this topic. I am just sharing my knowledge.
Layers can be defined as different elements or themes within your story.
Some examples of layers:
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Humor
Culture
Language
Concepts (counting, alphabet, etc.)
Religion/Spirituality
Below are a few books I believe incorporate layers well. You may be able to find more layers than the ones I list for each book.
Snappsy the Alligator Did Not Ask to Be in This Book by Julie Falatko, illustrated by Tim Miller
Layers: Breaking the 4th Wall, Unreliable Narrator, Humor, Words & Illustrations tell a different story
Soul Food Sunday by Winsome Bingham, illustrated by C.G. Esperanza
Layers: Slice of Life, Family, Culture, Food, Back Matter
Room for Everyone by Naaz Khan, illustrated by Merce Lopez
Layers: Counting, Language, Rhyme, SEL, Religion, Back Matter
If you are looking to add another layer to your story, review your MS while asking yourself the following questions:
What layers do you currently have?
What element would fit seamlessly into your story?
Can you add another layer to your story or amplify a layer that is hidden?
What is your story truly about? Summarize your story in two sentences.
What stands out to you the most?
What story thread runs through your entire story?
How can you pull on that thread to unravel another layer?
I hope this information helps you in adding another layer to your story or in discovering the layers already within your story.
