Spring Break Baby Woes

I love writing contests. They push me to create new stories and are fun to write. This 149-word story was written based on a spring related gif (link below). I hope you enjoy my submission for the #springflingkidlit contest.

A big thank you to contest hosts @KaitlynLeann17 and @CiaraONeal2 as well as the kind donors.

Spring Break Baby Woes

Tick, tock.

I should be happy. No school for a week.

“Psst!” Henry, my only friend, nods toward the clock.

“It’s almost time,” I whisper.

“Shhh…” hushes Mrs. Habersham.

I pretend to read.

Tick. Tock.

Five minutes left.

I rub my eyes, trapping the tears. What will we do without Mrs. Habersham? She always protects us when the other kids aren't so nice.

“RRRIIIINNNGGG!” The final bell. My stomach sours.

“Hooray! Spring Break!” yells everyone, except me and Henry.

“Class dismissed! Enjoy your break!” shouts Mrs. Habersham over the symphony of desks and chairs scraping the floor.

Henry and I shuffle to her desk, handing her a pink bag. Inside, a floral bonnet for her baby. I quickly swipe away a runaway tear.

“Thank you. Until I return, the sub will look out for you,” she reassures me. We wrap our arms around her.

“We'll miss you,” I whimper.
